Chapter 15
Taylor had asked the taxi driver to wait. The telephone in the apartment was still connected, but she needed the security of knowing that if she chose she could just turn round and walk away. Walk awayâ¦or run?
Her throat was tight with tension as she inserted the key in the lock, the new lock that Bram had had fitted for her.
The air inside the apartment tasted stale and unlived in. It held a faint chemical smell, which she realised must come from the professionally cleaned carpets and curtains. Something else Bram had organised.
As she hesitated in the doorway to the sitting room the first thing Taylor noticed was the empty space where her sofa had originally been. The insurance company had agreed to cover the cost of everything that had been damaged or destroyed. But Taylor had not given any thought to replacing anything. Living with Bram, cocooned from reality by the protective warmth of his love, there had been no need to do so. No need and certainly no desire.
The very thought of coming back to live here now, after what had happened, made her feel queasily cold, her eyes lifting instinctively to the locked windows, her heart starting to flutter in panic.
After the comforting lived-in clutter and warmth of Bramâs home, the apartment felt barren and inhospitable. The moment she stepped into the room a feeling of claustrophobic fear engulfed her, paralysing her so that she could neither advance nor flee.
Oddly, Taylor found the atmosphere even more menacing now than she had done on the night of the break-in. Then she had had shock to protect her from some of the terrors of her own imagination; now she did not. It was all too easy to picture the intruder stalking her, watching her, waiting.
The door to her bedroom was open. She could see inside it. The bed was almost corpse-like with its plain white single covering; her bedding had been destroyed, but even if it hadnâtâ¦
Her skin started to crawl. Already she could sense the terror waiting for her, a yawning black chasm, its mouth reaching greedily towards her, wanting to suck her down into its dark, destructive vortex. A living hell from which she might never escape.
Before the break-in, the moment she was inside the flat she would lock the doors and windows, close the curtains, to hide herself away from the outside, prying eyes of the world; now, she was even more terrified of the opposite, of being locked away in here with itâ¦with himâ¦. She could almost smell him, feel him, see himâ¦.
The front door, which she had left open, suddenly swung closed.
She tried to scream, but she couldnât. She was suffocatingâ¦drowning, dying in the thick, black fog of terror that engulfed her.
And then she heard Bramâs voice.
She was laughing and crying as he held her in his arms, apologising for frightening her, telling her that he had cut his stay in Strasbourg short because he hadnât been able to be away from her any longer.
